An honest comparison, written by the person who builds Pacenote. Fireflies and Fathom are mature products with teams behind them; Pacenote is a beta built by one PM for his own calls. Where they are better, the table says so. Every vendor fact links to its source below; check the vendor pages before you buy, prices change.

In one line each

Pacenote

A co-pilot during the call: facts from your own preparation, a ready sentence when you are asked. Audio stays on your Mac, notes go to Notion. Free app; Claude through your key or your Claude plan.

Fireflies

The broadest note taker: a bot or the desktop app records, 100+ languages, strong search over past meetings, CRM sync and team controls. Live help and a pre-meeting brief exist, but they know the meeting, not your project.

Fathom

The strongest free plan for recording and summaries, live summaries, clips, CRM sync and team views for sales. Bot-free on Mac.

What users say

From reviews on G2, Capterra and Trustpilot and tests by independent writers in 2025-2026 (links below). Review sites lean positive, so the critical reviews say more than the averages.

Fireflies

  • Confirmed strengths: summaries and action items save time (the most common praise); searching and asking about past meetings (AskFred) works well; CRM sync, especially HubSpot; many languages and in-person recording.
  • Reported weaknesses: speakers mixed up on calls with many people, crosstalk or one room camera (the most common technical complaint); summaries that flatten nuance; the bot joining meetings by default, also when you are not there; AI credits that run out quickly and billing complaints; mixed-language calls need the language set by hand.
  • Live Assist and Meeting Prep: few user reports yet. The live answers know the meeting so far and what you uploaded to its knowledge base, not your project folders; testers found the in-call chat fiddly or distracting.

Fathom

  • Confirmed strengths: accurate summaries and action items with one-click follow-up emails (many reports); a generous free plan; easy setup and click-to-replay from the summary.
  • Reported weaknesses: the bot sometimes does not join or two bots join the same meeting (the most common complaint); hard to keep the bot out of some meetings; slow email-only support; summaries in only 7 languages, names and non-English terms come out wrong; CRM sync only on Business.
  • Bot-free Mac capture and live summaries (April 2026): no user feedback found yet. There is no help during the call beyond the live summary.

Pacenote, honestly: a beta from one developer, Mac only, no team features or CRM yet, and the setup installs about 2.5 GB (speech and search models). Live tips depend on how good your preparation is: with an empty project folder they know only the call.

Which one when

  • You want help while you talk, from your own preparation, and the audio must stay on your Mac: Pacenote.
  • You want the broadest tool for a whole team: recordings everyone searches, a brief before meetings, many integrations and admin controls: Fireflies.
  • You sell and want free recordings and summaries, clips, and notes in your CRM: Fathom.

They do not exclude each other: Pacenote is about the minutes while you are on the call; the others are better archives after it.

Not there yet in Pacenote

  • CRM. Designed with a team server (Pacenote for teams), not built.
  • Summary without Notion. Save it to Google Docs or Word in your Drive or OneDrive.
  • Windows. Pacenote is a Mac app.
